SEARCY – Tampa junior forward Shelby Kuni scored four goals and added an assist to lead the third-ranked Spartans to a 6-0 shutout of Harding on Friday in women's soccer action. Both teams are members of the NCAA II South Region, Harding in the Gulf South Conference, and Tampa in the Sunshine State Conference.
Kuni scored the only goal in the first half on a header in the 30th minute off an Alicia Wyman free kick. The floodgates opened for Tampa (6-1-0) in the second half.
Kuni scored less than two minutes in and assisted on Ashley Flateland's goal in the 51st minute. The Spartans then blew the game wide open with three goals in three minutes. Kuni scored her third in the 63rd minute. Senior Marissa Bernard netted her third of the season in the 64th minute, and Kuni completed the scoring with her fourth of the game and ninth of the season in the 66th minute.
Tampa goalkeeper Shannon Aitken, a senior, recorded her fourth shutout of the season with four saves.
The Spartans out-shot the Lady Bisons 21-4 with three of Harding's shots coming from senior forward Kendyl Washburn.
Harding (3-5-0) and Tampa have now met three times. The first came in 2004 in the Lady Bisons' first-ever appearance in the NCAA II Tournament. Tampa won the game 4-1. Harding then upset nationally-ranked Tampa 3-2 in 2005.
The Lady Bisons play another in-region game Sunday against Southwestern Oklahoma State at the Harding Soccer Field. It is the second game of a doubleheader with Tampa meeting Ouachita Baptist at noon in the first game.
